What’s the key to making your makeup last on hot summer days ?
It’s what you put on underneath.
After 15 years of desert living -wow, I’m old – I’ve tried tons of beauty products to combat triple-digit temps. These are my tried and true, all-time favorites to put the smackdown on makeup meltdown !
1. Laura Mercier Hydrating Foundation Primer
If you were only going to buy one product to make your makeup last all day, this would be my top recommendation. I’ve used it for years, so I can attest to its ability to keep your foundation fresh all day long and into the night. I like this because you can use it as your moisturizer, since it hydrates as well. It feels light and creamy on your skin and the 1.7 oz tube will last a loooong time. $30
2. Urban Decay Primer Potion
When I tried this at Sephora, the sales associate told me, ” This product will change your life. ” Secretly inside, I was rolling my eyes. That’s a heady claim, but she sent me home with a little tub of it and when I ran out, I instantly replenished. It’s a workhorse all right; keeps your eyeshadow on for hours ! There are 2 formulas I’ve used; the original and the Eden. Both are great; the Eden ( pictured on right ) has a little natural color to it, so you can use it as a natural looking shadow for days you don’t wear colored shadow. Tip: Make sure you let it dry before you apply shadow on top of it for the best crease-free results. $20
3. Trish McEvoy Classic Gel Eyeliner Pencil
This is my staple eyeliner pencil. Doesn’t smudge, doesn’t wear off, period. Tip: Use the sponge applicator immediately after applying for a softer, smudged line. Comes in black, brown & gray. $20.
4. Trish McEvoy Line Refiner
Another staple I can’t live without. Personally, I’m not a fan of under-eye concealers; I just feel like they make me look too heavily made up. So I use this instead; it’s a moisturizing formula that goes on clear; it softens the lines around your eyes ( and lips ), it’s hydrating and you can put it on under or over eye make-up. Tip: I rub the wand directly on my fingertip and then pat on under my eyes to avoid getting makeup in the tube. You’ll love how it feels and it’s much more natural looking than concealer. $36.
5. Kate Somerville Plumping Lip Gloss and Restorative Lip Treatment
Because I’m a girl that spends a lot of time in the water during the summer – swimming and boating – it’s hard for me to avoid the drying effects of the sun, wind and desert heat. I received a sample of this product when Kate introduced it at Neiman’s Beauty Event. I use the lip treatment portion when I know I’m going to be outdoors, before and after, to keep my lips from chapping and drying out. It’s truly awesome. And then I sorta got addicted to the plumping lip gloss on the other side, even though I’m more of a lipstick girl. But it really does plump and add a lovely natural gloss to your lips and I find myself just wearing it around the house because it feels so good. The double tube lasts a long time since you don’t need much and I can honestly report I’ve had nary a chapped lip this summer while using this. $29
This last product is not about makeup, but I want to share it with you because it’s having a profound effect on my skin and hair.
6. Organic Virgin Coconut Oil from Trader Joe’s.
For the last few months, my exercise program has been swimming 5 to 6 days a week. Cuz ever since I started this blog, I spend so many hours in front of my computer that my behind has grown increasingly large, and I’m so over the gym and I like exercising outdoors.
But an hour in the pool every day, while bringing me great joy, health benefits and a somewhat smaller behind, has completely wreaked havoc on my hair and skin. Especially my scalp. According to The Google, coconut oil is a perfect natural remedy for dry, itchy skin and scalp issues.
I started by massaging this onto my head at night. No more itchy scalp.
Then I decided to rub it on my dry cracked heels, which led to me just rubbing it on my hands after doing dishes, etc. I could be bathing in it soon. It’s supposed to stimulate hair growth, you can cook with it and of course, it smells divine.
It’s 5.99 for a 16 ounce jar and I feel like a genius for discovering it ! So if you have any dry skin issues, you might want to try it.
It really will change your life.
Ha !

Swimming is my favorite form of exercise, cuz I HATE exercising. Hate. And yes, even I need to, to keep my sanity. But I’m going to have to get some of that coconut oil from TJ’s! My hair is always so dry and so are my legs and feet. This is great:)
