In honor of Memorial Day, I would like to share some photos of my trip to Arlington National Cemetery last summer. It’s an unforgettable experience to see the seemingly endless rows of grave markers here, nestled in lush grassy hills, forming perfect lines as far as the eye can see.

Arlington National Cemetery Graves 1

More than 300,000 people are buried at Arlington Cemetery.

Arlington National Cemetery Graves 2

Veterans from all our nation’s wars are buried here, from the American Revolution through the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.

Arlington National Cemetery Graves 3

Arlington National Cemetery conducts approximately 6,900 burials each year.

Tomb of the Unknown Soldier

The Tomb of the Unknowns is one of the more-visited sites at Arlington National Cemetery. It is guarded by the U.S. Army 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The 3rd U.S. Infantry (The Old Guard) began guarding the Tomb in April of 1948.

Three unknown servicemen are buried at the Tomb of the Unknowns: the unknown soldier of WW1, WW2, and the Korean War.

Arlington Memorial Amphitheatre

The Memorial Amphitheater was the dream of Judge Ivory G. Kimball, who wished to have a place to assemble and honor the American defenders. Three major ceremonies are held here each year: on Easter, Memorial Day and Veteran’s Day.

Arlington Memorial Amphitheatre Interior

Inscribed above the stage, from Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address, are the words, ” We here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain. ”

John F Kennedy Gravesite Eternal Flame

Thousands visit the John F. Kennedy site every year; the Eternal Flame was commissioned by first lady, Jackie Kennedy.

Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Gravesite

She is buried next to him.

They are an important part of our history, to be sure.

But so many have sacrificed so much for our freedom.

Korean War Memorial

In just 3 years, over 54,000 soldiers died in the Korean War, with another 8000 missing or unaccounted for.

On Memorial Day, I think it’s important to acknowledge all of the brave men and women – their families and loved ones -  for their service to our country.

Arlington National Cemetery Graves 4

” The beautiful park-like grounds are now a field of the dead. Up the hillsides by thousands and tens of thousands, stretch the long regular serried lines of tombstones. Here, line by line, in rank and file, at peace behind the battle, lies the silent army now. It is so hard to realize, looking upon these squadrons of the dead, still seeming drawn up in battle array, that every one of those cold white stones strikes down to the dust that was once a human heart, that throbbed with the passionate pain of parting, at leaving home and love, that thrilled at the trumpet’s call, that beat with high hope and valour and gave its life-blood for the victorious cause that it held dear.”
