In 1943, the War Production Board issued L-85,  an apparel order to American fashion designers and manufacturers designed to conserve fabric, machinery and man-power.

The silhouettes were slimmed down. Double-breasted suits and jackets were banned; no more than 2 pockets were allowed and plastic buttons were used instead of metal, all in an effort to conserve man-power and materials.

American fashion designer Muriel Johnstone adopted the slogan, ” Conserving material for victory. ”

It’s hard to imagine this in modern day America; we want for so little. But in the 1940′s, the greatest generation made everyday sacrifices to support the war effort, from food and fuel to materials used in clothing.

Take time to honor those who sacrificed today; tell their stories. The American spirit is at its best when shared.
